The US’ special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.

Their talks are believed to have included a renewed push to salvage stalled ceasefire talks and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as well as the return of hostages still held by Hamas.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of increasing Interntional pressure on Israel as Canada and Portugal have joined France and Britain in saying they will recognise – or are considering recognising – Palestinian statehood if the situation continues and certain conditions are met.
