From Global News.
In a first ministers’ press conference in Ontario on Wednesday, Premier Doug Ford said that provinces needed a stronger provincial role in immigration. He said Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab was not on the same page as Prime Minister Mark Carney and the provincial ministers on the issue.
"We need the prime minister to be clear with his minister," Ford said.
Ford added that Ontario would issue its own work permits instead of waiting for federal work permits, using the authority under section 95 of the Constitution.
"Tremendous amount of asylum seekers" are without jobs and "sucking up the system non-stop," because getting work permits takes over two years."
Ford said the Ontario government spent over $100,000 on asylum seekers last year, and he was "still waiting to get paid back."
