Dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators were arrested Wednesday after occupying and blocking Columbia University’s (CU) Butler Library and later protesting outside the New York City institute.

CU Apartheid Divest (CUAD) protestors wearing keffiyeh headscarves and masks demanded the school enforce a strike and sever its financial ties with companies linked to Israel’s military – amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Additionally, civil rights advocates have accused CU of curbing free speech after facing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump – who, in March, cancelled hundreds of millions of dollars in scientific research grants over the protests.

Trump has deemed nationwide protests both “antisemitic” and a massive safety concern for Jewish students and is working to deport many international students with a pro-Palestinian alignment.
