From Global News.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met at the White House on Monday to discuss potential pathways to ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
And while the discussion was seen as far more productive and jovial than Zelenskyy’s previous Oval Office visit in February, experts are expressing concern on Trump’s new stance on a potential ceasefire after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
“It’s not very hard to kind of sway Donald Trump and to manipulate his position,” said Olga Tokariuk from the Chatham House Ukraine Forum. “He clearly does not have a very deep understanding of history of relations between Russia and Ukraine, of history of violated agreements, of promises that were broken by Russia,” she added.
Trump previously backed European leaders’ proposal to solidify a ceasefire, but now, the Republican agrees with Putin, saying any peace agreement must be comprehensive.
During their meeting, Zelenskyy – who was accompanied by other European leaders – said he was “ready for [a] trilateral” meeting with Trump and Putin, to discuss ways to “stop killing people immediately.”
