A zoo in the Mexican city of Guadalajara has welcomed the first captive birth of a Vallarta mud turtle in Mexico. An endangered species, it is thought to be the smallest turtle in the world. "Very little information exists about this specimen because it was only recently discovered," says biologist and head of the zoo’s herpetarium Ricardo Davila, who notes their maximum length as 10.2 centimetres.
