Europe is now the fastest-warming continent. Much of Portugal is on high alert for forest fires and parts of France, Italy and Spain have issued extreme heat warnings as southern Europe suffers under record temperatures.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who was in Seville for a UN conference, said he was experiencing the heat wave ‘firsthand’ and warned that extreme heat is the ‘new normal’.
