“Everything got destroyed”: Deadly earthquake hits Guatemala, causing widespread damage

From Global News.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Guatemala on Tuesday, according to the Central American country’s seismology institute.
The institute also registered at least 37 aftershocks ranging from magnitudes of 3.9 to 5.6, officials reported.

“Everything got destroyed inside due to the force,” said Sonia Elizabeth Salome, whose home was impacted by the quake. “The walls cracked, the floor cracked, and our belongings were destroyed inside.”

A volunteer fire brigade worked on a road in Sacatepequez, in the country’s southwest, to recover the bodies of two people killed by a boulder.

The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala reported on Wednesday that the death toll climbed to four, while nine people remained in hospital.
