Firefighting helicopters take off from a sports field in the coastal city of Yeongdeok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, as South Korea battles the wildfires scorching swathes of land in the country’s southeast. The wildfires, now the largest and deadliest on record in South Korea, have burned more forest and killed more people than any previous blaze, officials said Thursday, as the death toll hit 27.
