French troops and firefighters carried out search and rescue after Cyclone Chido hit Mayotte

French troops and firefighters carried out search and rescue tasks for victims of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte on Sunday.

A week after the storm ravaged Mayotte, France’s poorest territory, the region remains in crisis.

Hospitals are overwhelmed and doctors warning of mounting risks of epidemics like cholera due to the lack of clean water and electricity.

Medics were seen tending to adults and children in the streets, cleaning and disinfecting wounds and bandaging injuries.

Thirty-five people have been confirmed dead in Mayotte but French Health Minister Geneviève Darrieussecq has warned that any estimates were likely major undercounts.

Efforts to deliver emergency aid including airlifts of water and food are underway but the scale of the need is staggering.

Mayotte is located between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean.
