Israel’s military said it targeted and killed prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif, asserting he had headed a Hamas militant cell – an allegation that Al Jazeera and al-Sharif previously dismissed as baseless.

Four other journalists were also killed in the attack on Sunday, which press advocates described as retribution against those documenting the war in Gaza.
