Global National: April 10, 2025 | Why Canada’s Arctic is under the geopolitical spotlight

From Global News.

The Canadian territories have long been aware of the importance of Canada’s Arctic sovereignty and security. Now the rest of the country is starting to pay attention, too. Dawna Friesen explains how Russia and China’s increased Arctic presence, as well as the unreliability of the U.S., has thrust Canada’s North into the geopolitical spotlight.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney is trying to address criticism of his party being too soft on crime in recent years. David Akin looks at what Carney is proposing to crack down on crime and some of the plan’s similarities to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s crime platform.

Canada dodged U.S. President Donald Trump’s "Liberation Day" tariffs, but there are still other levies in place on some Canadian imports. Mackenzie Gray explains how Poilievre is blaming Carney for not ending the Canada-U.S. trade war, Poilievre’s promise to slash housing development charges, how some Tory supporters are protesting the party’s poll numbers and how Poilievre is responding.

Plus, it’s important to be good neighbours in a vast and sparsely populated region, and few people understand that better than Alaskans and Yukoners. Dawna Friesen goes to Skagway, Alaska, where she speaks with residents about the importance of a strong Canada-U.S. relationship and hears what Alaskans are afraid of losing.
