Global National: April 4, 2025 | US-China trade war escalates: China hits back with 34% tariff on US

From Global News.

The global trade war started by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs is escalating between the world’s two largest economies. On Wednesday, Trump unveiled steep 34 per cent tariffs on all Chinese goods imported to the U.S. and China has struck back with matching 34 per cent tariffs on all imports from the United States. Jackson Proskow reports on the move that’s fuelling fears of a global recession.

Canadian dairy farmers dodgeD Trump’s new tariffs this week but are still on edge. The president has repeatedly called Canada’s supply management program a major problem in the U.S.-Canada trade deficit while Canada has maintained that the program is non-negotiable. But as Mike Armstrong explains, dairy farmers fear that Canada’s stance might change post-elections.

Liberal leader Mark Carney pledged on Friday to boost CBC and Radio-Canada’s funding if elected. The plan includes developing a new mandate for the public broadcasters which Carney called crucial to protecting the country’s sovereignty in the face of U.S. attacks. As Mackenzie Gray reports, the plan comes in stark contrast to what’s being proposed by the Conservatives.

Plus, South Korea’s suspended president, Yoon Suk Yeol has been removed from office after the country’s constitutional court voted unanimously to uphold his impeachment. South Koreans will now elect a new leader within 60 days but as Redmond Shannon reports, the divisions within the country will take longer to heal.
