Global National: Aug. 15, 2025 | Air Canada faces midnight strike as talks with union stall

From Global News.

Air Canada is close to a potential shutdown unless the airline and its flight attendants can reach a last-minute deal in their labour dispute. The union asked the airline to resume "good faith bargaining" and urged the Minister for Jobs and Families not to intervene. Flight attendants are poised to walk off the job at 1 a.m. Eastern, leaving thousands of travellers scrambling to deal with the disruption. Neetu Garcha has more.

While the hours tick down to a potential strike, thousands of Air Canada passengers are scrambling to change their travel plans. Passengers are entitled to some level of reimbursement, and Heather Yourex-West breaks down the "rights of passengers" during an airline strike.

U.S. President Donald Trump says there was no final deal reached on a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire following his high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The two leaders met and shook hands on the red carpet after landing in Anchorage. Putin is the first Russian president to set foot in Alaska, which was once part of Russian territory. Jackson Proskow reports.

Plus, after nearly two weeks of negotiations, talks to curb plastic pollution with a legally-binding treaty have collapsed. More than 100 countries in Geneva demanded limits on production and toxic chemicals, but oil-producing nations wanted to focus on "recycling and waste management" instead. Vincent McAviney breaks down the impasse and the risk of yet another failed round of plastic talks.
