For the first time as prime minister, Mark Carney paid a visit to Ukraine on Sunday, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to supporting the war-torn country against Russia’s invasion. Prime Minister Carney met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Ukrainian capital as they celebrated Independence Day, marking 34 years since Ukraine separated from the Soviet Union. That sovereignty is now under attack. As Carney announced details for billions of dollars in new military aid, he was asked about the possibility of deploying Canadian troops to Ukraine. Palestinians in Gaza City are bracing for an imminent Israeli assault. Isreal’s prime minister approved plans for a military takeover of Gaza’s largest city, expected to begin within days. U.S. President Donald Trump is looking to expand his crackdown on crime. In an extraordinary move, around 2,000 National Guard members were deployed in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. Trump said the troops were needed to fight widespread violent crime in the district. Now, Trump says he wants to deploy troops to other cities where he says crime is out of control. The city of Montreal is under fire after producing a first of its kind framework on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). The plan comes after a reported spike in hate crimes and extremism in Montreal in recent years. The new DEI policy outlines five key areas of focus, but as Phil Carpenter reports, community groups are upset over what is notably absent.
