From British Columbia to the Northwest Territories and all the way east to New Brunswick, air quality alerts have been issued for much of the country on Sunday. Smoke from wildfires is settling over several major cities, with Toronto and Winnipeg among them. Environment Canada’s air quality alert map mirrors what is clearly visible on satellite — a thick swath of smoke stretching southeast across the country. Heather Yourex-West looks at where the smoke is worst and has the latest on the wildfires.
Outrage is growing in Israel after Hamas released a disturbing new video showing a visibly frail Israeli hostage. The footage has ignited calls for immediate action from both hostage families and global leaders as starvation deaths continue to rise. Vincent McAviney has the reaction and a warning, some of the images are disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised.
In northern Manitoba, child welfare workers are sounding the alarm over the deaths of young adults, they say are being swept under the rug. They are linked to a program run by a First Nations child welfare agency meant to help First Nations youth transition from foster homes to independent living. But as Melissa Ridgen reports, some on the frontlines say they are being set up to fail and no one is being held responsible.
It was no contest Sunday as Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh swam to her fourth gold medal at the world championships in Singapore. She finished nearly eight seconds ahead in the 400 m individual medley. McIntosh also won a bronze medal at the competition, giving her five in total and at just 18 years old, she was named the best female swimmer. As Lexy Benedict reports, fans back in Canada have been watching in awe.
