Israel rejected a statement by Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney over a planned recognition of a Palestinian state, saying it represented a reward to militant faction Hamas. This comes after Carney said on Wednesday that Canada intends to recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations in September.

International pressure is growing on Israel to ease the overwhelming suffering in the Gaza Strip, but the situation inside the war-torn region doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon.
