Global National: March 8, 2025 | Questions on Canada’s next PM rise as Liberal election nears

From Global News.

Saturday marks the eve of the race to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as leader of Canada’s Liberal party. Just weeks ago, the party didn’t have much of a fighting chance to win a looming federal election, but fiery rhetoric and economic threats from south of the border have put a spring back into the party’s step, and, it seems, into the campaign of one candidate in particular. As Mackenzie Gray reports, we’ll know Sunday who will become the next leader of the party, and of the entire nation will be.

Long-awaited news has arrived for the family of one of the victims of a Winnipeg serial killer. Late Friday, the Manitoba government announced remains found at a landfill north of the city belong to Morgan Harris. Harris is one of four Indigenous women murdered by Jeremy Skibicki, who is serving four life sentences for the 2022 murders. Melissa Ridgen reports from Winnipeg.

President Donald Trump’s attack on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts has triggered a heated debate in the U.S. The Republican leader signed an executive order in January ending government support for such programs and is calling on federal agencies to scrap what he calls "woke" initiatives. As Candice Cole reports, the Trump administration is pushing ahead with a major purge of what it sees as politically-charged words.

From Gaza and Iran to Afghanistan, women around the world continue to face unimaginable challenges: fleeing conflict, enduring oppression and fighting for basic rights. Among those who’ve sought refuge in Canada are thousands of Ukrainian women who left their country either alone or with children — all while carrying the heavy uncertainty of their loved ones’ safety back home. And many are finding strength in one another. Neetu Garcha reports.
