Pope Leo XIV delivered his first mass as pontiff on Friday. During the intimate service inside the Sistine Chapel, the pope called on his fellow cardinals to support him in his new mission as leader of the Catholic Church. The new pope has much in common with the late Pope Francis, including a connection to South America and a history of advocating for the poor. Redmond Shannon reports.
There are new signs that Canada’s economy is starting to feel the strain from U.S. tariffs. The country added 7,400 jobs in April, slightly better than expected. But the unemployment rate ticked up from 6.7 to 6.9 per cent. Some of the gains were temporary hires for the federal election — masking a significant drop in manufacturing and other sectors. Talks between the U.S. and China are set to begin in Geneva this weekend, to resolve a trade war sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s enormous tariffs on Chinese imports. The dispute between the world’s two largest economies has already wreaked havoc on markets and the supply chain. But as Jackson Proskow, Trump seems dead set on finding any sort of victory.
