Greenland’s pro-business Demokraatit Party won the closely watched Parliamentary election on Tuesday, beating out the incumbent left-win coalition in an election dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s pledge to take control of the territory.

Since taking office in January, Trump has vowed to make Greenland – a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark – a part of the U.S.

Trump says the island is vital to U.S. security interests, but a majority of Greenlanders have rejected the idea.

The Democrats, which favour gradual independence from Denmark, more than tripled their seats in Parliament, according to results released Wednesday, and will form a coalition.
