While brick and stone are popular high-end options for siding, Hardie plank and vinyl are the most popular choices on the more affordable end. Let’s first take a look at how this Hardie fiber cement board is made. Fiber cement was invented in the early 1900s by combining cement with asbestos fibers. It was reinvented in the 1970s by James Hardie, the building materials company. They replaced asbestos with wood pulp.

Vinyl Siding is primarily made from polyvinyl chloride or PVC resin, along with other additives that provide color, flexibility, strength and resistance to UV rays.

The molten PVC mixture is forced through an extruder that shapes it into a continuous profile. While it is still warm and pliable, the siding is embossed with a textured pattern that mimics wood grain. It is then cooled and cut into 12 to 16-foot sections for ease of handling and installation.

In terms of durability, Hardie Board is more resistant to scratches, dents, UV damage and fading. It is also resistant to water. All these characteristics contribute to a long 50 lifespan with proper maintenance. Vinyl Siding is less resistant to scratches and dents, especially in colder temperatures. It is more susceptible to fading and discoloration and it typically lasts around 20 years.

Hardie plank’s biggest advantage is its class A fire resistance. It is non-combustible and will not ignite when exposed to direct flames. Vinyl siding, on the other hand, is prone to warping or melting when exposed to heat sources, like a barbecue grill or bonfire situated too close to your exterior. After melting, it exposes your home’s internal walls and studs, allowing the fire to spread.

istorically, vinyl was significantly cheaper but since 2022, their costs are almost identical. Fiber cement siding costs $5 to $11 per square foot while vinyl costs $4 to $10 per square foot. All attributes considered, Hardie plank fiber cement siding is a better long-term investment. It offers superior durability and aesthetics and lower maintenance. Vinyl siding is easier to install and budget-friendly and offers decent performance.
