Images released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory show columns of lava ejected from the caldera of the Kilauea volcano, which sprang into life again on Monday 23 December. Fountains of lava up to 80 metres high have been observed, according to the USGS. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupting almost continuously since 1983.
