Demonstrators had already announced their intention to protest the wedding. Various groups accuse Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro of selling their city to the world’s fourth-richest man at great expense.

About a dozen Venetian organizations, including housing and anti-cruise activists as well as university groups, protested the multi-day event under the slogan "No Space for Bezos." This play on words also refers to the bride, Lauren Sánchez, who recently flew into space.

The activists argue that the Bezos wedding exemplifies broader failings by the local government, which prioritizes mass tourism over the needs of Venice’s residents.
