Texas has approved legislation to redraw election maps. Texas’ Governor Greg Abbott has recieved backing from US President Trump for his partisan gerrymandering. Democrats and civil rights groups argue that the new maps would weaken the voting power of minority groups—potentially violating federal law—and they have threatened to sue.
In response to Texas’ Republican gerrymandering, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed his own redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms.
