“I lost my son to suicide”: Father tells US lawmakers how an online predator targeted his family

From Global News.

In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, lawmakers examined the dangers children face online and the role of social media companies in addressing these threats.

The session, titled Children’s Safety in the Digital Era, featured testimony from the father of Gavin Guffy, who recounted his son’s tragic suicide after being targeted by an online predator.

"The predator not only attacked my son Gavin, who was 17, but also began to extort my 16-year-old son, my 14-year-old cousin, and then myself. One of the messages I received read, ‘did I tell you that your son begged for his life?’"

"In just 1 hour and 40 minutes, my son was gone," he said, criticizing Meta for failing to prevent predators from using its platforms.

Guffy urged lawmakers to take action, stating, "we can’t just talk about it. We have to be about it."
