“I thought they would kill us”: Venezuelan migrant details alleged abuse in El Salvador prison

From Global News.

Alirio Belloso, a 30-year-old Venezuelan migrant, returned home to Maracaibo on Tuesday, recounting harrowing tales of alleged abuse and beatings during his detention in the CECOT, a high-security prison in El Salvador.

According to Belloso, the mistreatment began as soon as they were taken off the plane and continued throughout their incarceration.

"I thought they would kill us, because of how they treated us… I thought we were going to die there," Belloso said.

Belloso was among 252 Venezuelans detained in El Salvador and repatriated to Venezuela on Friday as part of a prisoner exchange. Since his arrival, he has been receiving medical evaluations and speaking with authorities.
