Tim is still exploring his 1998 case of toys…

Open the doors to reveal the sea… this optical illusion was a handout at an exhibition held by the British artist Patrick Hughes – https://www.patrickhughes.co.uk/

A lenticular skull – very gruesome. Just the thing for Halloween!

A Kineticard by Rufus Butler Seder, using a technique sometimes called ‘picket fence animation’. Slide the inner card slowly through the outer plastic covering, and you see an animated picture of a dancing man. The inner card has four different images on it, printed in thin sections. The outer plastic sleeve has thick black strips printed on it, with thinner clear spaces between the black strips. In this way, only one of the background images is visible at any moment. Slide the inner strip, and the four images appear in turn, giving the illusion of the animated dancing man. Tim also shows a Kineticard with a running cat.

More cards – Tim thinks he got these in New York – they have a pattern on the paper card at the back and a plastic sheet in front attached via a metal pin, so you can rotate the plastic sheet. The patterns on the plastic and the card back interact, giving all kinds of strange effects!
