In Syria, daily transactions—from meals at restaurants to purchasing vehicles—are conducted almost entirely in cash. Due to ongoing foreign sanctions, credit cards are unusable, and the largest available banknote is worth the equivalent of 50 cents in the U.S. As a result, even routine purchases require stacks of currency, and saving for larger expenses often means repeated trips to the ATM.
