India is purchasing Russian oil primarily for economic reasons, not due to any political alignment, an energy expert stated on Wednesday.

"We import oil from Russia… because Russia offers very good economics. Discount. That’s the only reason," Narendra Taneja, chairman of the Independent Energy Policy Institute, said, adding, "So I think it’s no love for Russia, it’s economics."

Trump’s move threatens to complicate U.S.-Indian relations further and comes shortly after an Indian government source stated that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit China for the first time in over seven years later this month.

U.S.-India ties are facing their most serious crisis in years after talks with India failed to produce a trade agreement.
