Iran arrests hundreds since 12-day war, cracks down on opposition figures | DW News

From DW News.

Tehran has reacted to the external threats from Israel and the US by launching a new internal security crackdown. Iranian authorities have reportedly arrested more than 700 people over alleged links to Israel.

It came after the Israeli spy agency Mossad released footage of what it said were Israeli agents operating in Iran. Activists say as many as six people have since been executed. And high-profile opposition figures have been arrested without charge, like rapper Toomaj Salehi and human rights activist Hossein Ronaghi.

The crackdown comes one week into the Iran-Israel ceasefire with all sides unable or unwilling to progress the peace process. Iranian officials now say more than 900 people were killed during Israel’s 12-day bombing campaign, which hit nuclear sites, military bases and other targets across the country. Iranian strikes killed at least 28 in Israel, according to Israeli authorities.

But despite all the missiles that rained down on Iran – including US bunker-busters – the damage to Tehran’s nuclear program remains unclear. Over the weekend, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency – the UN’s nuclear watchdog – said Iran could restart enriching uranium within months. Iran has suspended cooperation with UN inspectors, rejecting a request to visit the nuclear sites bombed by Israel and the US. The latest satellite imagery of the Fordo underground complex appears to show repair work underway. Inspectors still don’t know if highly enriched uranium was moved before the US strike.

The resumption of negotiations between Washington and Tehran also remains up in the air. Iranian officials say the talks are off, unless the US can guarantee there will be no further strikes. And after proclaiming himself a peacemaker in the Iran-Israel conflict, Donald Trump doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to restart the dialogue. Iran’s foreign ministry says the mixed messages are complicating diplomacy with Washington.
