From Global News.
Colossal Biosciences, a biology research company which describes itself as the “world’s only de-extinction company,” announced the rebirth of the dire wolf, a species that has been extinct for over 10,000 years.
Featuring two adolescent cubs, Romulus and Remus, the Texas-based bioengineering company used DNA extracted from two fossils as well as 20 edits of the genetic code of a grey wolf — similar to a technique used in the movie Jurassic Park, where dinosaurs are brought back to life by using frog DNA to fill in genetic gaps — to bring the species "out of extinction."
Corey Bradshaw, professor of global ecology at Australia’s Flinders University, was skeptical of Colossal’s claims and the actual practicality of reviving an extinct species like the dire wolf.
“When you claim all these great big things and then you don’t provide the associated evidence, especially in something as controversial as this, that is a massive red flag. It suggests that, well, at best, they’ve over-exaggerated. At worst, they’re lying through their teeth,” he said.
