Wildfires continued to burn on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Thursday, prompting firefighting efforts and evacuations.

Aerial tankers were deployed to battle the blaze in the Latrun area, where extensive damage was visible and smoke enveloped the hilltops. The main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem was also partly closed off.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Italy and Croatia were expected to send three firefighting planes. Israel has also appealed to Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria, the Foreign Ministry said.
