WHY ANAL ITCHING:
This uncomfortable sensation is often due to prolonged contact between the skin around the anus and fecal matter, which can happen from incomplete cleaning or due to gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea. The delicate skin in this area is easily irritated, and repetitive friction or moisture can further damage the skin barrier, leading to microtears and inflammation.

Several conditions can cause or exacerbate anal itching, including hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and even certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Some cases might stem from dietary triggers that alter the pH of stool or cause minor allergic reactions around the sensitive skin of the anus. Foods and drinks like caffeine, acidic fruits, and certain processed foods are known to provoke this in some people. Infections such as pinworms (particularly common in children) or fungal infections can also be culprits.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR FOR ITCHY ANUS:
Persistent itchy bottom, recurring itch, bottom pain, dark/red/black blood in stool, bleeding/leakage, altered bowel habits, generalized itchiness, unusual changes around anus, and presence of threadworms in stool or around bottom – seek medical attention promptly.
