Jailed Kurdish PKK leader says armed struggle with Turkey is over, calls for members to disarm

From Global News.

The jailed leader of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), a militant group that has led a decades-old insurgency against the Turkish state, says its armed struggle is over.

In a video posted to social media, Abdullah Ocalan urged fighters to hand over their weapons, calling for a shift to democratic politics.

“This is not a loss, but has to be regarded as an historical gain,” he said.
A spokesperson for Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM party said militants would begin handing over weapons in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaymaniyah Friday as part of the peace process.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed during a speech in Parliament Wednesday to protect the disarmament process. He said Turkey is casting off the “bloody shackles” of conflict and that the “wall of terror” would be torn down.
