From All Roads.
Since 1959, the Museum of the Gulf Coast has dedicated its 3,900 square feet to the history of Southeast Texas. The museum’s ground floor houses the largest mural in the Southwest tracing the state’s timeline from the prehistoric era through the oil boom of the 1900s. It features interactive dioramas alongside historical exhibits and displays.
The second floor houses galleries dedicated to notable individuals who call the town of Port Arthur home. One such gallery, the Rauschenberg Room, who was even personally designed by the modern artist himself before his death.
But perhaps none of these galleries is a bigger draw than that of The Queen of Rock and Port Arthur native: Janis Joplin. Though she left in 1960, her strugles would repeatedly bring the Woodstock legend home again. This truly rocking gallery pays tribute to her grounbreaking talent, featuring her original artwork and a replica of her famous psychadelic Porsche.
