Liberal candidate Paul Chiang steps down after Chinese bounty comment

From Global News.

Markham-Unionville MP Paul Chiang dropped out of the Liberal party’s federal campaign Monday night after comments he made about a former Conservative rival sparked outrage nationwide.

Chiang told a Chinese-language newspaper that opponent Joe Tay should be turned over to the Chinese consulate to collect a $183,000 bounty placed on him by Hong Kong police.

Tay, who was born in Hong Kong before immigrating to Canada, was a pro-democracy activist in China and has a bounty on him by Hong Kong police. Though Chiang apologized to Tay for his remark, the Conservative says, “no apology is sufficient.”

Despite receiving support from Liberal leader Mark Carney to continue his candidacy early Monday, Chiang now says he does not want ”distractions” during the federal election campaign and is now "standing aside.”
