London Heathrow airport shut down after electrical fire, over 1K flights cancelled

From Global News.

The UK’s London Heathrow Airport is closed Friday after an electrical substation fire knocked out its power overnight, disrupting flights for hundreds of thousands of passengers at Europe’s biggest travel hub.

The London Fire Brigade says the fire at the power station was brought under control about seven hours after it erupted in a ball of flames.

More than 1,300 flights to and from Heathrow have been cancelled, with thousands being diverted to London Gatwick airport, Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and Ireland’s Shannon Airport.

The airport said it expected significant disruptions for days and passengers should not travel to the airport until it reopens. Global’s Redmond Shannon reports.
