In this video I reveal the secrets for making Japanese senko hanabi sparklers with a bicarbonate based powder composition. Because the powder contains bicarbonate instead of an oxidizer, it can rightly be categorized as non-flammable. In fact the key ingredient in these sparklers, potassium bicarbonate, is also the active ingredient in “purple k” type fire extinguishers. This makes the powder uniquely safe among all other fireworks, and opens up the possibility for senko hanabi to be used as a science experiment in a classroom lab setting or by responsible adults in a home workshop.
