Mattel releases first Barbie doll with Type 1 diabetes

From NPR.

The CDC says hundreds of thousands of children in the U.S. have Type 1 diabetes, and now Mattel has announced it’s releasing the first-ever Barbie doll who has it too. The toy company says it hopes the doll allows more children to see themselves in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.

The new Barbie wears a blue polka dot matching top and skirt, has a pink heart-shaped continuous glucose monitor on her arm and an insulin pump attached to her waist. Mattel partnered with diabetes research organization Breakthrough T1D to ensure the doll was medically accurate.
