Canada’s Industry Minister Mélanie Joly will hold a joint media availability Friday alongside Stéphane Séjourné, European Commission vice-president for prosperity and industry.

It comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to hike tariffs on imported goods from Canada to 35 per cent. He said the new tariff rate would take effect on Aug. 1

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday his administration would continue to work toward a new trade framework with the U.S. despite a deepening rift between the two countries.

Trump’s letter is an aggressive increase to the 25% tariff rates he first imposed in March after months of threats.
