“Merrily We Roll Along” will play in movie theaters beginning Dec. 5

Video of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Merrily We Roll Along” will play in movie theaters beginning Dec. 5. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsey Mendez, the production won the Tony Award for best revival of a musical. It was a hot ticket on Broadway, and now it’ll be available worldwide.

“Merrily We Roll Along” was a notorious flop when it first played on Broadway in 1981, running just 16 performances. The story of three lifelong friends, from youthful enthusiasm to middle-aged disillusionment, is told backward.

But the Broadway revival was a palpable hit. Fathom Entertainment will present screenings of the video in December. A movie version starring Ben Platt, Beanie Feldstein and Paul Mescal, which is being filmed in chronological order, won’t wrap until 2039 at the earliest.
