‘Natural disaster’: Toxic algae bloom off South Australia kills over 400 marine species

From Global News.

A massive toxic algae bloom off South Australia has killed over 400 marine species and disrupted local tourism and aquaculture.

Premier Peter Malinauskas called the bloom a "natural disaster" and announced a A$14 million response package, matched by the federal government.

The outbreak, first detected in March, spans 4,500 square km and is linked to warming seas.

The Karenia mikimotoi algae has also triggered shellfish farm closures and mass wildlife deaths.
