From Global News.
In a historic bombshell in the automotive industry, Japanese automakers Nissan and Honda have agreed to merge their companies by 2026. Smaller manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan is a top shareholder, is potentially joining as well.
Sharing the news on Monday at a Tokyo press conference, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe and Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida accredited their decisions to the overwhelming competition and rise of Chinese-made EVs.
“The talks started because we believe that we must build up capabilities to fight them by 2030. Otherwise, we will be beaten,” Mibe said. “If the business integration is realized, it will make the company one of the largest among global automakers.”
Former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn casted his own doubt on the merger, noting that the automakers share the same strengths and weaknesses, which he thinks could make it difficult to establish relevance” against EV giants like Tesla or Toyota.
