Canadian Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner announced on Wednesday that the party will introduce legislation in the fall that would amend the Criminal Code to prevent judges from considering immigration status in sentencing.

"Removing non-citizens who have been convicted of serious crimes is a no-brainer, and it’s one which the Liberals have failed to act upon," she said.

Rempel Garner said that the current ruling allows non-citizens more leniency, which "offends all principles of fairness that should be foundational to our justice system."
