Orthodox nun speaks out against Russia’s Church | DW News

From DW News.

In Moscow, Patriarch Kirill has given his blessing to Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and many Russian Orthodox bishops have joined him. Meanwhile, in Rome, a US-born nun formerly affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church has been defrocked after speaking out against church leaders. But Sister Vassa has not remained silent. She has switched to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and continues to voice her criticism on social media, where she reaches hundreds of thousands of followers.

With a doctorate in canon law, studies in Munich and Vienna, and fluency in multiple languages — including Russian, Greek, German, and Italian — Sister Vassa brings both theological expertise and personal conviction to a polarizing debate within global Orthodoxy.

The decision to remove Sister Vassa from monastic status was published on the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. DW requested a comment on the decision and the Church’s stance, but received no response.
