Pain – why we feel it, and what can be done

From Lindybeige.

A fifth of the world lives in chronic pain. You may think that you feel pain according to how injured you are. If so, you are wrong. You may feel that emotional and physical pain are two totally different things. If so, you are wrong. You may feel that modern medicine can control pain with drugs. If so, you are wrong. You may feel that there is nothing you can do to help with your pain. If so, you are wrong.

The science of pain has come a long way in the last fifteen years. With modern scanners, we can now see pain in action in the brain, and with modern genetics, we can see the genes responsible for some extraordinary quirks.
