Pentagon awards $200M contracts to AI firms

From NPR.

The Pentagon is awarding multimillion dollar contracts to leading artificial intelligence firms, including ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI as the Department of Defense seeks to accelerate the use of AI to help address critical national security challenges.

The contracts were awarded to Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, each with a ceiling of $200 million.

No details of the contracts were given, but officials said the partnerships would broaden the Pentagon’s use of frontier AI capabilities in warfighting and in other areas — and help the companies understand and address critical national security needs.
