Faithful around the world prayed for the late Pope Francis after the Vatican announced his death on Monday at age 88.

Francis was history’s first Latin American Pontiff.

The Argentine-born Jorge Mario Bergoglio signaled a different papacy, embracing refugees and the downtrodden, especially in the wake of the troubled tenure of Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis also increasingly upset conservatives with his critiques of capitalism, outreach to the LGBTQ+ community and crackdown on traditionalists.

The Vatican said the cause of death was a stroke that put him in a coma and led to heart failure.
