Pope Francis has been laid in his red papal vestments in an open coffin. The Declaration of Death ritual was performed Monday night in a chapel at the Pope’s residence. On Wednesday, the pope’s body will be taken to St. Peter’s and will lie in state for three days so thousands may pay their respects. His funeral will take place Saturday morning. Pope Francis left instructions for a less elaborate funeral than his predecessors. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore will be his final resting place.
