Catholics around the world who prayed for the health of Pope Francis have had those prayers answered.

The 88-year-old was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after surviving a five-week, life-threatening bout of pneumonia, making a surprise stop at his favourite basilica on the way to the Vatican before beginning two months of prescribed rest and recovery.

Before leaving the hospital, Pope Francis was wheeled onto the balcony overlooking the main entry of Gemelli hospital where he gave the thumbs up and acknowledged the crowd that had gathered outside.

As Vincent MacAviney reports, the Pope’s path to recovery is not over.
