Crowds in St. Peter’s Square cheered after a new pope was elected during a conclave in St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday.

Earlier, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel to the roars of the crowd.

The white smoke poured from the flue on the chapel’s roof, indicating the Cardinal’s had successfully chosen a new pope during the third round of voting during the conclave.

The decision comes slightly more than two weeks since Pope Francis died on April 21, following a 12-year papacy.
